FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship kicks off in Rhodes

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically affected many areas of life, including chess. Some tournaments were either cancelled or postponed; other ones were held in the online format. The 2021 Rhodes Chess Festival, featuring one of the first over-the-board World Championship in nearly two years, is a big step towards returning to joyful normal life after the pandemic. The Rhodes Chess Festival organized by IO Nikos Kalesis (GRE) includes several events: the 2021 FIDE World Amateur Championship, the 16th IBCA Olympiad, the 2021 IBCA Congress, the 44th World Chess Solving Competition, and the 63rd World Congress of Chess Composition. Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage of DS Senanayake College, Senuja Thimeth Alwela of Bandarawela Central College, Chanindi Mewna Attanayake of Devi Balika Vodyalaya and Minethma Lasandi Wickramasinghe of Sujatha Vidyalaya were able to grab the Championships of Western 1 Open, North-Western Open, Western 2 Women’s and Southern Women’s events respectively. Six points were written in front of Pasindu’s name at the end of seven rounds and he was able to stay unbeaten until the end. Two games he shared were played against Insara Nanayakkara and Isara Banidu Dahanayaka who tied for the 2nd spot. Also, another reason why his name was written at the top was he was able to defeat Yasantha Jayaweera in the last moment, who led the event throughout. Mongolia wins the first Intercontinental Online Championship for Prisoners

Team Mongolia became the winner of the first Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners after defeating Team Zimbabwe in the final of the biggest ever chess event among correctional facilities. The event was organized by FIDE and the Cook County (Chicago, IL, USA) Sheriff’s Office and coincided with the International Day of Education in Prison. Both matches of the day were tremendously close, showing that these two teams clearly deserved to be in the final. The first round of the final was won by team Zimbabwe 2.5 – 1.5, however, Mongolia bounced back and won the second set 3-1, winning the final on game points. World Chess Championship 2021 World Chess Championship 2021 The World Chess Championship 2021 is a chess match between reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen and challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi to determine the World Chess Champion. It is held under the auspices of FIDE, the International Chess Federation, and played in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between 24 November and 16 December 2021. The match is a best-of-14 match, with tie breaks. The prize fund is US$ 2 million split 60/40 (55-45 in case of tie-breaks). Time control is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and 15 minutes for the rest of the game with increments of 15 seconds per move starting on move 61. CFR TEAM TAKES THE GOLD TO RUSSIA

The Russian players, competing in Sitges under the denomination "CFR Team", are the winners of the Women's Team World Championship, held in the coastal town of Sitges, Spain. It was a truly dominant performance by CFR Team, winning every single match and scoring 35 board points out of the 44 games played. However, their rivals in the final, team India, didn't go down without putting up a good fight. During the first match, Vaishali R blundered an exchange with 30.Rd5 and lost shortly after, but her teammate Harika managed to defeat Goryachkina and put a tie on the scoreboard.
